Georgia Law supports a two parent income model. Thus, a child support obligation is determined by the gross income of both parents. The parents income is submitted into the Georgia Child Support Calculator to determine each parties’ share of the child/ children’s financial care.
Special factors may be included into the calculation such as adjustments for parents paying work related child care cost and health insurance premiums. Further, a court may make deviations based on a case by case basis considering expense factors such as special medical, educational, and/or travel expenses.
A party may petition a court for modification of child support based a change in circumstances for either parent. Child support can be modified for a variety of reasons such as material change in circumstances for the child, mother or father. It is incredibly important for the person paying child support to calculate the correct fair number from the beginning to avoid arrearages, financial strain and continuous litigation.
